Finally! Action!! That long stretch of June where there are no posts by any of the characters is like a dry wasteland. But now the Count has finally shoved off for England! The map above is (of course) at least 50% conjecture given the unknown (mythical) location of the castle. The starting point is near the Borgo Pass and (for ease) the Count's Szgany escorts take major roads all the way to Varna. By car, this trip is nearly nine and a half hours, can't imagine by horse and carriage...in a box...full of dirt.

This part of the novel always has me thinking," Where could Jonathan go to even if he did escape"? Some might say "Go to the authorities", and my reply would be that Count Dracula is the authorities. He may have a few mayors and police officials in his back pocket. So Jonathan would have no where to go, no papers, no identification, nothing.

This part really gets me. After teaching the book several times, researching and writing about it, the gap between these last few entries never hit as hard as when we blogged it.

I wonder if a Victorian audience, reared on serials, would have been more attuned to the gap than we are.

Yeah, if this was ever a radio program that was true to the dates it would have been agonizing. Of course, I suppose it's no different than when a season ends of our favorite show and they say "all new episodes begin again in 20xx" (when 20xx is an entire year away).

Thinking more about the travel of this section - while there is not enough detail to know how long this might have taken by Szgany horse and wagon, it seems the Count may have had an evening in (or nearby) Varna when he may have taken the opportunity to 'top up' at the mercy of some more resident. This may have been a fun/interesting newspaper clipping added to the final journal entries (or even discovered while the hunters remained in Varna nearly 2 weeks in October waiting for the Count to [never] arrive).
