Not sure what the Google map is tracing. Berserker's route from the zoo to the Westenra residence?

Andrew Connell

Ah! Sorry I missed your comment - was out of town for a bit and just now checking back with the blog. Great question!

A few things happened Sept 17th that this map is (attempting) to depict:

1.) The Count visits Bersicker at the Zoo as detailed in the Pall Mall Gazette on Sept. 18th:

"There was Bersicker a-tearin' like a mad thing at the bars as if he wanted to get out. There wasn't much people about that day, and close at hand was only one man, a tall, thin chap, with a 'ook nose and a pointed beard, with a few white hairs runnin' through it."

2.) The Count also visits Lucy and her mother at Hillingham as we see in the text above: "I was waked by the flapping at the window, which had begun after that sleep-walking on the cliff at Whitby..."

3.) And lastly, Dr. Van Helsing heads back to Amsterdam (again).

Thanks for the comment!

Andrew Connell

Oh, I also depicted the Count's route as a straight line and didn't follow roads as I reckon he flew in bat form (given the 'flapping at the window' line above). That's a complete (but fun) liberty I took with this particular map!

And lastly, in retrospect, I probably shouldn't have drawn the flight directly over the Thames given the assumptions later on in the book during the hunt for the crates of earth... I'll make a note to correct this.
