Woo hoo! :-) The part about the bicyclists was what caught my eye. Friends and I cycle to cafes and have meals sometimes. Another bit of modernity in this book.

Very true.
The cycle was quite a symbol for mechanical empowerment. I dimly recall HG Wells making something of this.
