While listening to Vint Cerf's talk this morning, I backchanneled with some friends and colleagues. Which is typical. We started in IM, then decided to head to Second Life.
SL works decently as a backchannel. It does grab more processing power than IM, which makes it harder to switch between apps. The larger distraction is the greater richness of information in SL, primarily visual. But it works well. I listened to Cerf, blogged about it, and chatted with my colleagues easily.
You knew I'd ask, so here it is: who's the werewolf?

Trust the wolf to grab all the attention ;-). SL sucks up a lot of processing power, my MBP was almost out of juice in about half hour! I agree however, that the visual richness does make it harder to multi-task effectively - assuming there is such a thing as multi-tasking effectively ;-)
