These are 2 very strange stories. Daniels actually received better care than Speaker, yet both ignored the advice of the caregiver.

It is hard to equate the 2, however. Daniels is a homeless immigrant and Speaker is just an asshole. I did find this section of the NPR article interesting, however:

While Daniels hates his incarceration, he said he enjoys the attention he has gotten lately. He ran down the list of news organizations that have called his cell phone lately.

"I like the names: National Geographic, USA Today, People, Good Morning America, 60 Minutes, CNN, Associated Press, Channel 2, Channel 5, Channel 12 and so on," he said.

I wonder how an American citizen would have been treated in Russia under the same circumstances?

Also, how many homeless Americans are in a similar situation? Is the ACLU working for them?

This is all an example of the very sad state of world affairs, I am afraid.
