Gothic spaces are often built from ruins. Consider this account of Japan's Battleship Island, not far from Nagasaki.

Both the original experience of living there, and now the feeling of exploring these desolated spaces, suggest melancholy, sadness, extremity.
And so many stories can flow from this! Small islands are longstanding narrative devices, after all.
