How can Facebook avoid the fearsome internet meme? One way is to be seen as aiding law enforcement, rather than abetting or representing law breaking.
Apparently, a college student in Wisconsin accepted a Facebook friend request from a cute girl he didn’t know. Shortly thereafter, he got ticketed for underage drinking on the basis of a picture he’d posted of himself holding a beer–in his own home, no less.
This could easily spin the other way. It has an urban legend feel to it ("apparently..."). And there's that violation of privacy angle.
But the story doesn't see this. Brief as it is, the piece mocks the danger of the crime, rather than imputing a sense of fear or the uncanny.
Facebook is clearly developing a reputation for being on the clean side of the Web. See, for example, its use as criminal alibi.
