A fine article on horror movie music comes from Steven Thrower (Cyclobe). It's modern horror, 1960 on, and hits many fine examples.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) opening is excellent. Another highlight is Howard Shore's Videodrome (1983) soundtrack:
