What causes this sense of the Gothic? It could be the physical decay, or the sense of abandonment. The bear's muscles hinting at scary powers, or the disruption of the fallen horse. Or the sadness of childhood left behind.
The playgrounds I saw in Sofia, Bulgaria all looked kind of like that, but they weren't abandoned. I didn't see kids play on them much, either. They were usually busy playing football (soccer).
