The pleasure of the art of ruins: Dociu @ BLDGBLOG

Some gorgeously Gothic art is on display within this interview with Daniel Dociu.  A big copyright notice prevents me from copying, but won't stop me from insisting that you go eyeball the gloomy loveliness.

The focus is on Guild Wars art, and I must admit to not having played that yet.  Our family's Gothic gameplay is now joyously sunk in BioShock.

Russia after the end: the pleasure of ruins

This image project imagines Russian sites after a terrible calamity.  For example, after a deluge:

To be more accurate, some of the images depict cataclysms in process - i.e., explosions hitting buildings.

    Beware the Tokyo Gore Police

Tokyo Gore Police is an impending horror movie which has some kind of plot.  But it's this trailer - oh yes, so NSFW - that's worth watching, for sheer gonzo Asian Gothic who-knows-what? madness:

    More doppelganger art

An artist creates photographic doubles of herselfJanieta Eyre explores her doppelgangers in a series of photos:

    Coilhouse meditates nicely:

They say that you can never truly see yourself; not in mirrors, or photos, or windows, or water. All you see is a flat reflection. You go through life with only an idea of how other people see you in the three dimensions, always one step removed from every true angle. Unless you’re (un)-lucky enough to have a twin - “the creepy kind,” as one of my friends with a non-creepy, fraternal twin brother would put it. From mythical manifestations as partners-in-crime who finish each others’ sentences to polar opposites who seek to annihilate each other, the concept of twins has always enthralled and horrified the human race.

At Infocult we are all about the doubles.  Intentional doppalgangers: for crime, for unchanging children, for hiding subterranean loot.

    In praise of creepy dolls

Reason considers good reasons for the realistic baby dolls, which other folks find disturbing.  Greg Beato mentions appreciation for craft, then moves on to compare RealDolls and reborns not to babies, but to pets.  He also recommends the artificial ones for a specific need:

But, really, if what you're mainly looking for in a baby is a fleshy no-hassle security blanket, then it certainly seems saner—not to mention more humane—to choose a plastic infant over a real one, doesn't it?

It's an interesting type of argument, a sort of anti-Gothic, a warding off the horrors.

Creepy buildings: Bldgblog and the insect spies

The architectural paranoid is the subject of the latest Bldgblog post. It's full of Gothic gems, racing from robot insects to Judge Shreber to - well, listen:

what about landscape? You drive past a "cornfield" – but you know it's not a cornfield. "This is not a cornfield," you whisper. "I think it's listening to us." The stalks look funny, and they don't sway with the wind. You and your friends go camping in the forests of northern California, but you sit there outside your tent all night, eyeing the redwoods. "These aren't trees," you insist every few minutes. "I don't think these are trees."
