Who was Jack Sheppard? I always wondered, so I decided to look him up. Jack Sheppard [1702-1724] was a notorious English burglar. He was arrested and imprisoned numerous times but kept escaping. Hence, Jack Seward's comment that "Jack Sheppard himself couldn't get free from the strait waistcoat that keeps [Renfield] restrained..."
