Cf 24 June. If infants were regularly snatched from near Castle Dracula, surely the local people--who knew the Count's nature and his weaknesses--would storm the castle at midday and destroy the source of their grief.

Excellent points! The locals knew about St. George's Eve, crucifixes, garlic, wild rose, and mountain ash. Beyond that, we can only speculate.
