It seems very strange that the captain did not keep the log from the day they left port. Surely he would want to note the weather and ship’s location every day, at least.
Perhaps he used a different log for such mundane information. Perhaps he kept a false log for the authorities to inspect.

We are reading the captain's log as published in the Dailygraph. There, the log is described as "a transcript, simply omitting technical details of seamanship and supercargo".
That description would cover the information that I originally thought had never been noted. *sigh*
