One wonders what the Demeter’s nameless captain thought was really in the boxes. Did he truly believe it was soil? It might have seemed strange to him that the ship was chartered for something so mundane. Such large boxes could have been carrying rifles or disassembled light artillery pieces.
If he thought the shipment might contain contraband, he didn't seem worried about it. A generous payment of backsheesh here and at the Dardanelles, and in England they would dock at Whitby to avoid the customs inspectors at the busier English harbours.
