Lucy doesn't want her best friend to worry about her when Mina is far away and needs to nurse Jonathan to health, and so she writes some creative fiction. Lucy says that she is in Whitby and in good health when in fact she has been at Hillingham (near London) since at least 24 August. Arthur is not gong on outings with her, but rather seems to come and go according to the state of his father's health (Lucy's journal, 24 & 25 August, Holmwood's letter 31 August, Holmwood's telegram 1 Sept).

Perhaps the early return to London from Whitby was caused by the failing health of both Mrs. Westenra and Lord Godalming, who have homes near London.

“P. P. S.—We [Lucy and Holmwood] are to be married on 28 September."

Apparently Mina did not receive Lucy’s letter until after her return to England; Mina’s 17 September letter, written shortly after she arrived in Exeter, asks Lucy when they will marry.
