"There distinctly was Lucy with her head lying up against the side of the window sill and her eyes shut. She was fast asleep, and by her, seated on the window sill, was something that looked like a good-sized bird...[She] is paler than is her wont, and there is a drawn, haggard look under her eyes which I do not like. I fear she is fretting about something."

Could the Count have taken more blood as a bat than he did as a man? Like Mina, Lucy may simply have noticed that Mrs Westenra was "more than usually ill lately" (Aug 11), which would be cause to fret. Lucy may even have overheard a conversation between her mother and her doctor, and now knows about her mother's terminal diagnosis.
