VISITS TO WESTENRA TOMB

Number of visits: 4
Time of visit: about 11:45 pm, 28 Sept (nighttime)
Who: Van Helsing, Seward, Holmwood, Morris
Purpose of visit: To get Holmwood to consent to Lucy's decapitation; to seal the tomb so that Lucy cannot leave at night.
Anti-vampire measures: Mixture of Sacramental Wafer and putty is used to seal the gap between door and doorframe of the tomb so Lucy cannot pass; Van Helsing’s “little golden crucifix” is used to keep Lucy away from Holmwood.

Notes: Coffin is empty. Lucy is clearly seen as a vampire; she speaks to Holmwood. The putty successfully keeps Lucy out of the tomb; some must be removed to let her enter it, showing that it can also keep her trapped inside. Van Helsing previously said that he did not think that a crucifix and garlic were enough to keep her out of the tomb, if she wanted in. He has now established that his sacramental wafer-putty mixture alone is enough to keep Lucy out; perhaps this new method was an effort to find something that might also work on the Count, who is older and stronger.

“We could not see the [woman’s] face, for it was bent down over what we saw to be a fair–haired child. There was a pause and a sharp little cry…we could see that the lips were crimson with fresh blood, and that the stream had trickled over her chin and stained the purity of her lawn death–robe…”
“As for this little one, he is not much harm, and by to–morrow night he shall be well.”

"Lucy Westenra, but yet how changed. The sweetness was turned to adamantine, heartless cruelty, and the purity to voluptuous wantonness... her eyes ranged over us. Lucy’s eyes in form and colour, but Lucy’s eyes unclean and full of hell fire, instead of the pure, gentle orbs we knew."

Very subjective judgements, but they were sufficient to condemn Lucy to the stake and beheading knife. Not surprising, in an era when people believed that certain subjectively-determined facial characteristics showed criminality.
