"...the draining away of one’s blood, no matter how willingly it be given, is a terrible feeling..."

At that time, blood donors usually fainted, or came close to fainting. Today, we know that first-time donors are at a higher risk of fainting than repeat donors. With technological advances and a better understanding of the process, being a blood donor is not "a terrible feeling".

Give blood, if you can. Thank you!
