“Jonathan and Mr. Hawkins are busy all day; for, now that Jonathan is a partner, Mr. Hawkins wants to tell him all about the clients."

Mr. Hawkins lost no time in putting his succession plan into action. Despite his gout, he met the newlyweds at the train station, and within hours, he had informed them:1) that they were to move into his house with him; 2) that Jonathan, though unrelated to him, was his sole heir; 3) that Jonathan, the newly-qualified solicitor, was to be his partner in his legal firm. His top priority the next day was to start briefing Jonathan on their clients.

This haste suggests that, like Mrs. Westenra and Lord Godalming, Mr. Hawkins feels that his time is running out.

The placement of this letter after Seward’s journal entry for 19 September suggests that it arrived at Hillingham on 19 or 20 September.
