In hindsight, the fog was a hint to the Count's true movements. Just as the Demeter's captain felt that fog was following his ship, the Czarina Catherine's captain also noted that fog often obscured nearby land, and even followed the ship for five days after they passed the Bosphorus and entered the Black Sea (30 October). However, sometimes a fog is just a fog, and one can hardly fault Van Helsing et. al. for not paying more attention to this one.
