This impressive use of technology is easy to overlook in our internet age.
Someone in Galatz telegraphed Lloyd’s in London with news of the ship arriving in port there. The message travelled 1,346 miles to Lloyd’s, where someone read it and then forwarded the message to Holmwood in Varna, 1420 miles away. So the information travelled 2,766 miles (4,425 km) to reach Varna.
The ship docked at one o’clock local time. The telegram reached Holmwood soon enough that they were able to contact the vice-consul and get train tickets before sunset, at roughly 6 pm local time.
