“I think I must have been mad for the time, for I behaved much as a rat does in a trap.”

How does a rat run around in a trap?

Today, we are most familiar with the quick kill spring-loaded mouse/rat trap, but that was first patented in the US in 1894. (A similar British patent was issued in 1898.)

However, cage traps were used before this time, which caught rats but did not kill them. I suppose poison might have been placed in the cage, safe from children and pets, but perhaps killing the rat was simply left up to the trap’s user.
