“We've told yarns by the camp–fire in the prairies; and dressed one another's wounds after trying a landing at the Marquesas; and drunk healths on the shore of Titicaca.”

I am geographically challenged, so I will make a note for myself about how widely separated these locations are. “The prairies” are almost certainly the Great Plains in the United States, probably in or around Texas. (Try as I might, I can’t make a good case for the Canadian prairies). The Marquesas are islands in the middle of the Pacific, on the northeast of French Polynesia. Lake Titicaca is in South America, on the border between Peru and Bolivia. Also, Morris believes that he lost a horse to vampire bats in the Pampas region (Argentina / Uruguay / Brazil--18 Sep); was he with Holmwood then, or was this a solo adventure? We later also learn that Morris and Holmwood were once pursued by wolves near Tobolsk, which is smack in the middle of Russia (over 2,000 km east of Moscow and an approximately equal distance from the Pacific coast of Russia).

So it would seem that Holmwood, at least, has circumnavigated the globe, accompanied by Morris for most or all of his travels. The route would be London to Texas to Bolivia/Peru (and perhaps the Pampas region), then sailing west to Russia via the Marquesas, and finally back to London.

Of course, it is also possible that we are hearing about multiple separate trips, but once you get to the Marquesas, you may as well keep going west!

Seward was apparently with them for at some of their travels; his journal entry for 28 October, describes his familiarity with Morris's habits from their "old wandering days". It is unclear where they met. Morris refers to Seward as an “old pal from the Korea”.Could it be that they met in or near Korea? Then as now, the main Russian port on the Pacific was Vladivostok, which I was surprised to learn is very close to Korea. Vladivostok is also the endpoint of the Trans-Siberian Railway, which began construction in 1891, and was completed (via Manchuria) in 1904. So it's not utterly outrageous that they met in or near Korea (perhaps a Korea Club in Vladivostok?), but it's probably impossible to prove.
