“I took off my boots, and ventured out...”

Like the Count, Jonathan does not trust his leather-soled shoes (“boots” in British English) to give him secure footing on the castle walls, and prefers to climb barefoot.

“The only thing I found was a great heap of gold in one corner—gold of all kinds, Roman, and British, and Austrian, and Hungarian, and Greek and Turkish money, covered with a film of dust, as though it had lain long in the ground. None of it that I noticed was less than three hundred years old.”

Why is the Count’s treasure trove here? His nearby library may include books that would enable him to pick out the most valuable items from his hoard before cleaning them and presenting them to a prospective buyer. The Count does not seem one to blindly trust someone else’s appraisal of these items, which are the main source of his wealth.

“By the side of the box was its cover, pierced with holes here and there.“

Demetru was not the smartest Szgany in the bunch. When the other gypsies pointed out that the Count did not need air holes in the lid, he suggested that the holes could be useful for seeing out of the box. A hole-free replacement lid had to be built before the loaded boxes were put on the wagons.
