The captain does not seem very confident that the strange happenings have ended with the searching of the ship. Did something strange happen the cargo was even loaded? Perhaps the consignor insisted on inspecting the ship, but would not board until the turning of the tide? Was there a strange fog that surrounded just the Demeter and none of the other ships in port? Or perhaps it’s just that the consignor’s eyes were strange. (cf. Mina’s journal, 5 October)
