30 July.--Last night. Rejoiced we are nearing England. Weather fine, all sails set. Retired worn out, slept soundly, awakened by mate telling me that both man of watch and steersman missing. Only self and mate and two hands left to work ship.

Another theory on the missing sailors: prolonged, close exposure to the Count causes fear and, eventually, madness— psychic toxicity. We saw how Jonathan became more and more frightened in Castle Dracula, to the point where he took incredible risks to escape. It may be that the same thing is happening to the sailors, but the effect in the smaller confines of the ship is more intense, to the point that it is preferable to jump overboard rather than spend another minute on the ship.
