On 6 July we finished taking in cargo, silver sand and boxes of earth. At noon set sail. East wind, fresh. Crew, five hands. . .two mates, cook, and myself, (captain).

Last year, I expressed some concerns about the log of the Demeter not including some of the routine information expected from a ship’s log. However, I had missed the prefatory note from the original newspaper article, stating that the published version omitted “technical details of seamanship and supercargo”. Mea culpa!
