Most Significant

“‘I don’t want any souls!’ he said in a feeble, apologetic way. The matter seemed preying on his mind, and so I determined to use it—to ‘be cruel only to be kind.’”

Yes, Dr. Seward, that’s how to rationalize away your ethical worries.

Most Significant

“‘If I may state my intellectual position I am, so far as concerns things purely terrestrial, somewhat in the position which Enoch occupied spiritually!‘“

I finally looked up Enoch in the King James version of the Bible, and found this:

Genesis 5:24, KJV: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

Hebrews 11:5, KJV: By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

So, Enoch did not die but went directly to heaven. Renfield seems to be saying that, due to his connection with the Count, he will gain physical immortality on earth, rather than the spiritual immortality in heaven that Enoch received from God.
