A DVD version of Freaks (1932) is out. Donald Melanson reviews it over at Mindjack, with this fine comment:
That Freaks remains classified as a horror film is not a disservice to the film's subject matter but rather it demonstrates the breadth of the genre.
Interesting - two black & white horror classics were based on stories by the same man, Clarence Aaron "Tod" Robbins. He wrote the novel The Unholy Three (made into the film of the same name - twice!) and the story "Spurs," which Freaks was based on.
Looks like "Spurs" is available via the aptly-named olgabaclanova.com here, for anyone wanting to compare the two.
