Here's a nice tidbit about repurposing cell phones - for light in the dark:
In the Sprint survey, almost 2 of every 3 people used their cell phone backlight to look for something in the dark, mostly keyholes and walkways, while 7 percent said they used their backlights to cheer on their favorite band at a concert, replacing the trusty lighter of the past. And finally, 4 percent have used it to light up their face to tell a ghost story.
I admit to having done all of those things.
I have to admit that I used mine to read by when staying with a friend who wanted to go to sleep before I was done reading. It worked well except that I had to keep opening and closing the phone to make the come back on! :-)

Heh!
I used my phone as a flashlight during last year's wild Halloween event.
Speaking of kids, there's a cute scene in the very sweet Spooky House (2000; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0160905/), where the geekest child uses her laptop as a flashlight.

I don't smoke anymore, so I never have a lighter.
