Tom Standage has a nice little piece in Wired about previous media phobias, fears, panics, and anxieties. It's just a taste, but useful.
Standage's telegraph book is delightful, if you haven't already glommed it.

Been meaning to read the telegraph book for a long time ... thanks for bringing it back into the top of my mind (at least until the next thing drives it away).
