"Digital lynch mob": digging into hyperbole

Digital lynch mob: Richard Cohen uses this wildly wrong metaphor to describe, um, getting a lot of hostile emails (and some friendly ones, too).  The blogosphere has pounced on this in detail, which makes for... lynch mob II?  Son of Inappropriate Metaphor?  Perhaps a networked massacre.
