A history of Friendster's boom and plummet hit the New York Times this week. It's a bracing read, with a quick story and rapid-fire partial explanations: the curse of ego, generation gaps added to too many layers of control, the blitzkrieg rise of copycats, a bad response to creative identities, and especially worsening technical problems.
