One interesting, not too significant design approach in World Without Oil: referring to outside media without linking to any. Case in point, a description of an LA Times article sans hyperlink. The Washington Post is mentioned as well. For richer media this can work better - think of descriptions about Second Life scenes, or reports of radio shows. But for text-centered media, like newspapers or their web presence, this requires a bit of extra suspension of disbelief.
Which, in turn, touches on the difficulties of fitting ARG content into the rest of the world.
One way of approaching this is to focus more on the character presenting the information, assuming a level of information literacy not quite at blogger-level.
