"Somewhere nearby is a colossal cave" is an excellent history of the original Adventure game. Dennis Jerz (English, Seton Hall) recovers the composition of the game, establishing the context and circulation of the original code. Jerz also explores the code itself. Essential reading for history of the internet, and for history of gaming.
There's a great writeup of the history of the game in Nick Montfort's book Twisty Little Passages: An Approach to Interactive Fiction.

Bryan, thanks for the plug.
For the record though, I'm at Seton Hill University in Pennsylvania, not the New Jersey school with the similar name.
