Scientists have come across some new life forms in the chilly seas around Antarctica. At least one explorer caught the Lovecraftian ramifications:
It's "exciting when you come across a new species," said Chris Jones, a fisheries scientist at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "All the fish people go nuts about that..."

Hmm . . . I'm not sure that they're gelatinous enough for HPL.

Perhaps the scientists firmed them up. As a disguise, since the scientists' minds have obviously been hijacked.
