Hoaxes for storytelling are a key part of the alternate reality game antecedents background. Another type of hoax appeared this week with an artist's apparent use of GPS and snail mail to draw a picture upon the world's surface.

UPDATE 5/27/2008: Yep, it's a fake. The artist has added a line to the bottom of his webpage stating "This is fictional work. DHL did not transport the GPS at any time."That information is now at the top of the artist's page, pushing the hoax experience solidly into the past.
