Police caught an Italian criminal (alleged) after he revealed his location via Facebook. The unclever fellow fled native Sicily for Britain, and there started Facebooking increasingly informative posts and photos. For instance, this one of himself at Madame Tussaud's:
On the one hand, this story is part of the classic foolish-criminal-gets-caught genre. Clearly the guy acted idiotically, or was at least overcome by the cockiness suggested in that photo.
On the other hand, the Guardian story lacks any trace of anxiety. There isn't a note about privacy collapsing into surveillance or the democratized panopticon we now enjoy. No references to previous Facebook scare stories.
Has Facebook finally exited the fear realm? Have we just naturalized it, without allowing any frisson of the uncanny?
