A Washington Post tweet offers this mildly disturbing micro-story:

President Trump pointed to a window in the White House.

"She’s doing great. She’s looking at us right there."

Reporters turned to look. There was no sign of the first lady.

Sinkhole campaign returns to Florida

The Earth continued her campaign against the human race by opening sinkholes in Florida.  That's sinkholes, plural, as in four of 'em.

Four sinkholes have opened up in a fast-growing retirement community in Florida, including one in front of a home that was abandoned months ago because of an earlier sinkhole.

No casualties so far.

Of the four new sinkholes, one is underneath the lake, two are in yards and one is on a road in front of one of the abandoned homes.

A sinkhole attacks the White House and metaphors collapse

Gaia opened a new front in her campaign against human civilization, this time by striking at the United States government.  A sinkhole has begun gnawing at the White House itself, or at least its lawn.

As one reporter put it, "This week I’ve been observing a sinkhole on the @WhiteHouse North Lawn, just outside the press briefing room, growing larger by the day."

This new front in the sinkhole campaign might not be entirely new after all.  MSN notes that 

Sinkholes have opened up across the city in recent years. They forced two residents to abandon their homes in March, and swallowed up a school bus last year.

DC seems to be in the Earth's subterranean crosshairs.

Meanwhile, the jokes about the White House and pits, about draining the swamp and the empathic environment are both easy and inevitable.

Canada receives another severed foot

The Canadian tradition of seeing severed human body parts wash up on various shores continued this month, as a shod but otherwise lonely foot appeared "on Gabriola Island in the strait of Georgia".

A man was walking along the beach just after noon when he came across what appeared to be a disarticulated foot inside a hiking boot. The boot had become lodged in a logjam...

[P]olice said they are currently working with their forensic identification service and the provincial coroner in an effort to identify the remains.

Earth rips open a giant hole under New Zealand

A vast sinkhole opened under a New Zealand farm, extending Gaea's ruthless war against humanity.

It's a big one: "The astonishing fissure is 656 feet long, 66 feet deep and 16 feet wide."

At the bottom is soil dating back 60,000 years.

One example of Victorian Horror

Dangerous Minds has a nice sketch of Frozen Charlottes, nineteenth-century dolls that, as they put it, "slept in coffins and were baked in cakes".

The dolls cost a penny and were insanely popular—some being sold with their very own coffin and blanket-cum-shroud. In Britain these dolls were often baked into a pudding or cake as a fun surprise for children to discover—or more likely break their teeth on—at Christmastime.

Like a morbid king cake.
