A Washington, D.C. street became a site of urban Gothic this week, as a construction crew's glitch presented a dire threat:

The explanation is prosaic: "A construction crew was trying to cut a hole, and their blades got stuck."  Which makes sense.  But until the crew extracts the blades, they remain a clear image of urban horror.
